Lash Primers - Worth the hype?

Marketed as the secret to getting the most out of your lashes; are lash primers really an essential in your beauty routine?
I have samples of both Estee Lauders Little Black Primer and the new Benefit They're Real Tinted primer and I've decided to put them to the test to see if they're actually worth the effort.

Estee Lauder Little Black Primer is aimed to be use in 1 of 3 ways - 1. To tint the lashes a 'silky black' 2. To amplify the lashes giving them volume and lift underneath mascara 3. To apply over top of your favorite mascara for a waterproof topcoat.

There is a slight difference between the two, if you look really hard, you can see that the primer adds a little more curl and definition. This product costs £20 - for that amount of money I would expect to see some dramatic results. Worn on its own, it's actually a nice tint, especially to my extremely fair lashes however if I was buying it purely for that I'd go get my lashes tinted. Worth the hype? not really.

Benefit They're Real Tinted Primer is not actually available until 2016, however in this months issue of Elle they're giving away a sample size to try. It's a minky brown tint that, in a similar way to LBP, it can be used to tint the lashes on low key make up days or can be worn underneath mascara to amp up the lashes. lets see how this fairs...

This formula is much more wet and thick compared to the LBP and so instantly makes my lashes look fuller. However, similar to the previous primer, the effect with mascara over the top is minimal, my lashes look fuller but only if you really examine them. There isn't currently a price for this product, but if it's anything like their other mascaras it will probably be around the £18-£20 mark. Worth the hype? again, no.
I'd say lash primers are a bit of a gimmick, their best purpose is to tint the lashes for no make-up make-up but are definitely not worth their hefty price tag. My advice would be to anyone wanting that false lash effect? buy some false lashes. Eylure do some amazing natural looking ones (My faves are the no.020's).
